'Try thinking inside the box'

So lately I’ve been enjoying the look of more webpage, less “stuff”.  With a little tweaking, Safari and Firefox can be set to give you more screen real estate.

Safari FireFox

Safari (on the left) is my favorite for this view style.  If you select the view menu and choose to hide the menu bar, toolbar and the bookmarks bar.  Since the new 4.0 beta puts tabs on top, you get maximum viewing space within the window.  To go to a new address, a simple CTRL+L will drop down the toolbar so you can search or enter a site.  After you press enter, it hides again very nicely.

For FireFox, you get just slightly less screen since the tabs are not part of the window title bar, but still very nice.  You can use CTRL+L like Safari to go to a new site, but it doesn’t give you the whole bar, it gives you a separate open dialog box.

Sadly, for all the good improvements in IE8, you cannot seem to hide the location bar at all.  So I didn’t bother with a screen shot.

Not entirely free.  Had to shell out the $20 for the full version of ObjectDock from www.stardock.com

Very nice features though including adding as many docks as you like and tabbed docks (i.e. my top bar).

I have my tabbed top bar drop down when pointed at and keep whatever you want for quick reference on any tab (make all the tabs you want).  I made a tab for the system tray as well so I don’t have to stare at it all the time, but easy access when needed.

If you don’t like windows, but have no choice, perhaps ObjectDock is worth checking out to ease your pain.

Short comment (I know, after this long it should be something longer).

Loving my new Ubuntu Mac theme (more on that another day), I had to clean up my Vista desktop.  So with the help of ObjectDock (free!), here’s what I have:

Obviously, the same could be just as easily done in XP as well.  There are things I like better in ObjectDock compared to AWN in linux, but other things that AWN does better, but mostly preferencial items.

Wow, I just finally checked out the video options for the olympics this year by nbcolympics.com

I missed most of the cycling from Saturday, but have not only been able to watch all the coverage straight through (no commercials, all cycling).  I’ve been really impressed at the quality of the video.  No option to go full screen, but the largest setting isn’t bad considering the number of users and streams they have to try and support.
